Morning Pregnancy Tests - Why Should They Be Done?

Taking a pregnancy test in the morning is recommended because first-morning urine generally contains the highest concentration of pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).

Early in pregnancy, hCG nearly doubles every two days.

When you decide to test very early in pregnancy test distribution, first-morning urine is most important. Whether you urinate on a stick or in a cup, the concentration of hCG is the same, so your results are also valid. It is defined as before the first day your period is due, or shortly afterward.

The hCG levels are typically high enough by the fourth or fifth week of pregnancy to result in a positive result, regardless of whether you use your first-morning urine or not. Even when the test is taken later in the day, pregnancy is easier to detect if it's been a long time since you missed your period.

Would you like to test later in the day?

A more accurate test can be performed later in the day if your schedule or circumstances make testing in the morning impossible.

It is possible to recreate first-morning urine for a pregnancy test by not going to the bathroom for at least four hours before taking the test.

Whenever possible, avoid drinking more fluids than usual. Overhydrating can be a mistake because you assume drinking more will increase urine production. However, this will dilute your urine, so pregnancy hormones will be harder to detect.

A blood test can be performed at your doctor's office and is more accurate than a urine test if you're further along in your pregnancy. Blood tests are more sensitive than urine tests and can be performed at any time of day.
